A Librarian's Lament

The worst, the absolutely worst part of any librarian's job is assuming the role of "repo" person. Now don't duck your head and look away. Stop hiding, you know you have them in your locker, at home under the bed with the dust bunnies, or lost in the great abyss of school bookbags. More than 3 weeks ago many of you borrowed one or more library books and forgot to return them on time and now the librarians must put on their "repo" costumes. What a drag.

The library staff has been looking for these lost, lonely books because, believe it or not, other students want to read them too. Unfortunately, many students are being denied the pleasure of reading a library book because others can't remember to return what is not theirs.

Let's talk money, you know, the dollars and cents that are needed to replace a lost library book? Well, people, the simple truth is we just don't have the money to buy new books to replace the ones that are never returned. And what about those library fines? Just 10 cents a day, you say? Let's see, if a book is returned 60 school days late, that's $6.00 in library fines and that means we just might be able to buy a replacement book---if it's a paperback, of course.

Please check your school email to see if you have received a notice reminding you to return any overdue library books. If you have a notice, find the book(s), gather your courage (we know you can do this), and return those lost library books so they can be welcomed back by all our readers. If you need to pay a late fine, bring money! There are many new books just waiting to be purchased for your reading pleasure.

So, let's do the right thing, ladies and gentlemen, and return those late, lost, library books!

Go Bears.
